What's inside a sump?

Hello Experts,

Since my tank is quite small (46Gl), I created a 30 GL sump to exchange water. So far so good. Now, I wonder what needs to be added into a sump to make the better quality in water and others? So far, I removed the thermo from the main tank and put into the sump. :)

What else? mud as someone told me? or plant? what kind of plant? I have no idea about this one, please help.

Thanks.

Plants are rarely seen in marine. You're probably thinking of marine algae Caulerpa.
I'm not an expert so I'll leave the sump contents recommendations to Usmc. :wink2:

I have my sump sectioned of into 3 parts. The sections are separated by pond filter media. In the first section is my protien skimmer, the second part is a live sand bed UV sterilizer, heater and some Caulerpa algea. In the third is just the pumpto return the water. Then you just buy a regular flourescent hood for the algea to grow.

For the algae, do you mean this type? http://cgi.ebay.com/live-chaetomorp...4269767QQihZ019QQcategoryZ66794QQcmdZViewItem
