What kind of filter?

Hi everyone, Petland Discounts sold us a Fluval 405 Canister Filter for our saltwater setup and we didn't know any better when we first got started.

I've had to change 40 - 50% of the water once a week because the levels get too high, so I am convinced we need a better filter - one meant specifically for saltwater aquariums.

I know there are combo deals that have a protien skimmer already built in. Can anyone point me in the right direction and tell me exactly what we need for our 55 gallon tank?

Thanks so much!

Canister filters should be sufficient, but I know lots of people use overflows with sump, that have LR in them.

How long has the tank been running?

Are you using RO or tap water?

Hi, the tank has been running since July 4th. Our levels keep going up which is why I thought perhaps we have to have a wet/dry filter after all. I was told those offer biological filtration whereas the fluval only offers mehcanical filtration.

We are using tap water with some tap water conditioner.

It shouldn't be the canister filter. Test your tap water. That is were your problem is.

Hi,

We tested the tap water and it appeared to be fine. It didn't look like there was any ammonia or anything else in it.

Are you guys saying that the Fluval 405 alone is fine for a 55 gallon saltwater setup?

It should be. I never had any problam with my magnum 350, when I had it on my 72 gallon. try cutting back on feeding them for a few days.
