Arrow What is this for?

Hello, I am just starting out on my first saltwater tank and I have a few questions. I was wondering if I would need an external water pump, and if so, why? What does it do? Also, do I need an air pump? FYI im looking into doing a 10, 20 or 30 gallon tank, not sure what size yet. Thanks!

I would not use an air pump at all. They really have no application in the marine hobby.

an external pump would be your return pump from your sump, or your pump feeding your external skimmer. these are good as they usually are energy friendly and produce less heat then alot of submersible pumps. however there are some great submersible pumps. no air pump, but you need powerheads, i suggest hydors.

Another reason many (those that are) use the external pumps is because they don't add any heat to the water. if you drop a mag12 into water and turn it on, you'll find it's a lot hotter then what it was before.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea...
