generally they are only used on rather large tanks for several reasons. mainly because of space and because they dont make a difference reall on small tanks. i heard they are kind of difficult and can cause algae blooms as well as other problems if not taken care of but im not too sure about the details.

55g semi-reef, ~100lbs live rock
Fish: 2 percula clowns, flame angel, coral beauty, french angel, royal gramma, brownbarred goby, blue-green chromis, panther grouper

Coral: Green starburst polyp, galaxy, leather, and mushrooms

Emperor 400 filter, Prizm skimmer, Orbit 260w compact flourescents

All you need to do is do a water change every few days or once a week.

this guy was building one himself and a lot of people gave advice there

you need to think about the lighting, too when dealing with this, also the effect it's gonna have will depend on your flow rate

HOB refugiums are perfect for nano/smaller tanks.

I employ one myself, I recommend the HOB refuge method to anyone with a nano tank - it works very well.

Tanks: 40 gal FW setup, 10 gal Reef tank.

there are several places on the internet that will tell you how to mod a aquaclear 110 into a very good fuge for smaller tanks.

29g semi-reef 20g sump

2 chromis, 1 ywg, 1 peppermint shrimp, feather duster (species?)

No real modding is needed, tbh. I use the AC110 unit, all you need to do is remove the media basket and stock it with LR and if you want some macroalgae.

Tanks: 40 gal FW setup, 10 gal Reef tank.
