Cool Taam Rio Nano Protein Skimmer

Hey I was looking at a Taam Rio Nano Protein Skimmer and I was wondering is the protein skimmer the thing that also looks like a filter, or is it just the small piece on the top?

Thanks!!!!

The whole thing is a skimmer. The tube that's in the collection cup is where the bubble gather and pour out into the cup at top and completes the skimming.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea...

Just to be technical and overly accurate...

The "skimmer" is the small round attachment that floats on the water surface, connected to the intake tube. This "skims" the proteins from the water surface.

Inside the unit is a vertical cylinder which holds bubbles. This is the "foam fractionator" or "separator", where proteins attach to the bubbles.

The top of the unit contains a collection cup. These bubbles rise up the "neck" of the cylinder and drop into the collection cup, where you can remove them.

That is the technical answer. In everyday use, the entire unit is now referred to as a "protein skimmer". The terms "foam fractionator" and "foam separator" are dated and rarely used in the U.S. However, you may find google searches or e-bay hits that describe a "protein skimmer" as being only the surface skimming device which removes surface oils or proteins.

I'm rambling. Bottom line, read Kellsindell's answer. I'mjust wasting space this morning until the movers arive...

By the way, I like this Rio model a lot better than the Skilter. I've seen the Rio in action and it isn't bad for a 10 gallon mini reef or 20 gallon FOWLR.
