Sump Question??

I am redoing my whole set up. I have a 75g tank. I am building a new stand that I will be able to put a sump in. I purchased a 29g tank to make as my sump. I plan on putting my skimmer where the water comes in then have the water go over one baffle then into the refugium that will have chaeto in it (due to nitrates of 20ppm). The water will then go through three more bafflles to reduce/eliminate micro bubbles and then back into my display. My question is how deep should I make the water in the sump? I can use egg crate to keep the skimmer at the water level it needs to be at. Any suggestions would be helpful thanks for looking

the fluval is prob. whats causing the nitrates. if your going to raise the skimmer with eggcrate the depth wont really matter. just keep in mind the less water the faster it will move through the refugium and evaporation will make your pump run dry or suck air into the display.

I really need to update my info. I have not had the Fluval on there for two months.

you need to allow enough space in the sump to hold any water that will drain into it from the display and from the plumbing during a power outage. If it helps, I have a 30g long as a sump (slightly larger footprint than a 29) on my 75 and I have about 4" between the operating level and the max capacity of the sump.

if you want to see it in operation, there are photos in the thread linked in my Signature.
