I might want to get a sump but i dont want to be nervous about a battery back up. I wanted to know that if i make the sump tall enough the water would stop running into it because the water line is to low. Because people always say that there sump overflows when the power goes out.

Brandon i dont think you read that post very closely. What is hapening when someones sump overflows is that they forgot to drill a whole in there return line to break the suction when the pump stops pumping. When i find my camera later today(ill pose some new picks of my tank) i will show you were i drilled the wholes.

And TR they worked right? My tank only back siphons about 1" of display water to the sump when I kill my return pump. Brandon the trick is to make sure you get a good sized sump. Find a volume calculator online, tank calculators work great, multiply your tanks length x width x 4". Whatever that is equals the amount of extra capacity your sump should have when running. My water line in my sump is about 7" deep but also has about another 7" of empty space to the top. When my return pump is unplugged my sump rises 2".

My sump never over flows. I would have the problem as to when the electric goes out the siphon for the over flow box and the pump would stop. Then when the power comes back on the sump pump comes on but the siphon for the over flow box doesnt start, resulting in the pump dumping all water from sump into the tank and over flowing that way.

Brandon are we back on the subject of your 30 gallon tank? Let me know what your talking about. Fuges arent that cool anyway im going with a skimmer instead, looks to be much more benifitial. But anywho for a 5 gallon fuge you want the flow to be slow but i dont know how slow. Its called contact time. I hope you dont have the problems with bubbles in your sump like im having. I hate them.
For a 5 gallon fuge i would go for like 300 gph. But once your baffles are inplace your fuge is gunna be even smaller so you will want a 10 gallon tank instead.

Ya they work perfectly. But the problem im now having is there is a little whole in the bottom of my overflow(the part of the box thats in the tank) and its slowely trickling into my sump. Tomarrow im gunna hit it up with some silicon and plug that whole.
