Skimmer for my biocube

I have read many times that a protein skimmer is a must-have for any saltwater aquarium. I do not have one on my 14 biocube, primarily because I previously read about how skimmers for a nano are not big enough to to do much good so it is just a waste of money. I am re-considering this now but I am still not sure what Is should do. What kind of skimmer would I get for my tank? Do I have to get one that fits into one of the back chambers or is there a way to hook up a larger skimmer outside of the tank?
What I do have is Pen-Plaxx Carbon (phos free), Phosban (doing wonders in my tank right now), and some cheato in a small container in front the the inlet. Thats it.
