Why do I see so many pictures of a skimmer sitting in a sump with the discharge and inlet in the same water? Doesn't this effectively mix skimmed water with unskimmed water in the sump? (unskimmed water could still leave the sump and be put into the tank)

Why wouldn't the setup be to pass through the sump completely, then past the protein skimmer, before going into the tank...?

honestly it doesnt matter IMO as it will pass through eventually. besides a quality over-rated skimmer is the way to go. im personally using a out of sump skimmer ( MRC-MR2 rated for i believe 300 gallons ) on a 90+40 sump = so about 120-130 gallon tank volume. read online reviews when looking for a skimmer as some are for sure better then others. IMO when setting up a reef tank, lights and a skimmer are the most important things.

It's not a silly question and i'm sure a lot of people have asked it. I know I myself have wondered at some point.
