What is the difference between RO and RO/DI?

I have a 55 gallon tank with live rock and live sand. I plan to add corals shortly. Do I need this type of filtration?

Is the RO filter a HOB filter or is it something one hooks up to a water supply and fill a bucket?

i dont know the difference if infact there is any between RO and RO/DI but RO hooks up to your water supply and you make RO water to make your salt water with. RO removes bad things found in your tap water like phosphates which are just going to encourage hair algae to grow. you can purchase RO water or already mixed saltwater from LFS. seeing that your from NJ... i think tropiquarium has 50cents a gallon for RO and 1.00 a gallon for pre-mixed salt but im not 100% on those prices. if your really have an interest in keeping a marine aquarium, i personally think its a cheaper investment for you in the long run.

I concur and the only real diff from RO untis that you buy are the diff stages that you can get, many swear by the 5 stage, but i've nevery used less so i can't tell you the diff between units. you can go to online vendors like marine depot and ask questions in the threads they have or check the q&a section.

RO stands for Reverse Osmosis. This is the 4th stage in the 5 stage RO/DI process, wherein the water is forced to pass through a special membrane. This membrane allows only the water molecules to permeate through.

DI stands for De-Ionization. This is the 5th (and final) stage in the 5 stage RO/DI. In this stage, the water is passed through a resin that converts any remaining ions in the water to the Hydrogen ion.

The RO filter simply lacks the DI stage of the filter.

There are, on occasion, additional stages beyond the standard 5 stage.

Here are the stages

1. 5 micron sediment filter
2. Granulated carbon
3. 5 micron cocunut carbon filter
4. Reverse Osmosis Membrane
5. De-Ionization Resin
6. Second De-Ionization Resin
7. In-line granulated carbon (for drinking water)
