Question........Ever line a hood with foil?

Forum,

I have a custom built hood on my 55g tank. It does not have a reflective cover or coating of any sort. I was thinking I could line the top (inside) with
heavy duty aluminum foil. Its inexpensive and very reflective. Anyone ever tried this? Any known problems?

Thanks
Willy

I've never used foil, but I've used polished aluminum sheets, mirrors, and high polished stainless steel. Just be careful and make sure that there will be absolutely no conductivity issues. We could be reading about you in the daily paper. Water, electricity and metal do not mix.

I've certainly used mirrors before. Still use a reflector as that will get between 85-95% of the light focused straight down. The mirror will reflect back what escapes or bounces back up. Foil should work, but how well. Mylar is King I found out recently. Many plant r hydroponics shops sell bulk mylar sheets in rolls for doing just this. It's cheap and easy to work with.

Here is the real kicker. I read awhile back, much to my astonishment, that painting the canopy with as high gloss a white as possible, silver works but not as well. Seems that a super smooth gloss or white reflects back almost as well as polished reflectors.

I recently tried covering the inside of a 10gal hood with foil, just to see if it would have any effect... I didn't notice any difference at all.

Foil ~will~ create hot spots... mylar would be the best out of the two...
