I've been kicking around the idea of adding a fuge. I have a stock room full of hang on filters, including an AquaClear 500. I am currently running a gutted Skilter 250, just for activated carbon. ( I removed the skimmer section.)

What is the basic concept you have recommended for creating a fuge out of a hang-on unit? I also have a small compact florescent lighting system that would easily mount on top of a hang-on filter.

In an ideal, no cost world, I would add some live rock rubble from the bottom of my aquarium to the bottom of the existing gutted skilter filter. Then mount the compact florescent unit.

How would you approach this situation?

I've seen a ton of mods to the AC110 fuge, and I'm sure it would be the same for the skilter. Most of the Ac110's mods use some of the material that comes with it, but the "more advanced" users use glass and make many baffles.

I would make sure you have at least one baffle. Maybe 2. The first one could be optional; it would hold a sponge. But, make sure it has a way for water to flow through it (the media holders for the AC110 are prefect) and still go over. The second would be a small compartment for the heater, and would maybe have glass, then make the water go down.

So in reality, 1 optional sponge area, with a glass baffle with holes drilled in it for the first (with water going over), and then room for a heater in the next compartment with a glass baffle pushing water to the bottom. Then the fuge itself, with LR rubble and chaeto, and a light.

I doubt this made any sense, so I will try to get a picture to you by tommorow. I dont have too much time right now to do it.
