Hi guys I just bought a 55 gallon tank (uncles 180 that he was going to give to me has a dirty big crack in it) and was wondering what Protein skimmer would be good for it. I don't want to spend to much but still want it to work. I also plan on getting a sump (20 gallon), so an in sump skimmer would be preferable. I have as much head room as i want as ill be building a new stand for the tank soon. Any help would be great.
Thanks in advance.
I can offer you a ton of suggestions, but it is important to first know what your goals for the tank are. What livestock are you keeping? This is important, because when you say you want the skimmer to "work", we have to define how effective the skimmer needs to be for your intentions.
I can recommend skimmers ranging from $100 to $800. The needs of the tank will determine the cost. So, what are you looking to do?
I was thinking a reef tank. Couple clowns, flame angel, royal gramma maybe a yellow tang if it would fit? Corals, CUC live rock, live sand. I also have a refugium planned.
I want a skimmer that would would just help the whole system in getting rid of the nitrates, so by "work" i just meant "not be garbage".
I was thinking the 125g Coralife Needlewheel Skimmer. It had good reviews but seemed a little cheap at $150.
