Plenum

im getting ready to set my 55g tank as a fowlr. i plan to use a Plenum in this system with a 5 inch sand bed and very little lr. iv decided instead of makeing my own useing pvc pipe and the other mats to go with a under gravel filter that i will modify. iv been reading alot about these types of systems and some people say to leave the power head attached forever so water will be drawn down threw the sand and some places say only leave it on for a few months. has anyone used this type of system that can share thier exp with me please. any and all advise welcome =)

i just wanted to update on this. i went with the under gravel filter with the powerheads its been a while now and as of this past weekiv been getting alot of air bubbles comeing up from under the sand whitch is a sign the bacteria is doing its job. iv yet to do a water test to confirm this as i am out of test equipment (dog decided to destroy it dont worry he didnt injest anything lol) till later this week. one thing i have to say is with the force of the power heads its made my sand like concreat so when i remove them and the tubes next week im gunna have to stab at it a bit.
