Penguin330 bio-wheel

Hi Guys,

I currently have a 30 gallon freshwater tank and I'm looking to change it over to saltwater. I'm going to tear it down, clean everything and start all over. My only question is about my filter.. I have a penguin330 bio wheel. Is a bio-wheel ok to use in salt? If so, should I try cleaning everything inside the filter before running all that freshwater bacteria through my new system?

I would take the Bio-Wheel out. It just traps the nitrates which can lead into your tank, and that is a no-no in a SW. Do you plan on doing FO, FOWLR, or Reef?

I would suggest using an Aquaclear 70 or 110 though. You can turn it into a fuge, and it is quiet. The penguin will make water be lost faster.

Thanks for such a quick reply.. I plan on setting up a fowlr. I'm still reading and learning all the ins and outs of exactly how I'll set it up. Any suggestions of an effective in expensive filter?

Ok, I have been doing a lot of reading and took a field trip to my lps yesterday. They have some aquaclear 200 filters on sale for $19.99. They look a bit older, I'm sure discontinued, but are rated for 50 gals and turn 200gph. How would this compare to a $40.00 aquaclear 70?

I recomended the 40 or 70 because it adds a lot of space for a fuge. The 70 adds almost a gallon of water which would promote a lot of stability. If you dont want to spend $70 (I dont either), try looking for the 40.

Maybe you could try two AC50's.
