hey guys first off let me introduce myself. im steve. i had a 20 gallon reef tank but just upgraded to a 65 gallon. pics to come soon. i am using a sump for the first time ever and it is making alot of noise from the water draining into it. can someone please tell me why or how to make it quieter? thank you
If you want some detailed help, i suggest posting a picture of your sump system. I can, however, give you some pointers on making the water flow quieter. I have 2 tanks running with sump systems, and use 2 different techniques.
My favorite technique is to construct a tower of live rock directly beneath the drain pipe, where the water enters the sump. The water flow is broken up by the live rock and the result is less splashing noise. I use this technique in my 54 reef. The entire tower of live rock is beneath the water surface, but located directly under the drain pipe output. This also has the advantage of reducing the bubbles that enter the sump.
Another option is to use filter floss or a filter pad to reduce the noise. I do this on my 180 FOWLR tank. However, you need to realize that there are risks with this. If you fail to rinse the filter pad every day or two, then organic waste begins to accumulate on the pad and will cause your Nitrates to increase, as well as deplete your alkalinity. This is a serious issue that many people fail to realize, and is something very simple that can cause major problems if not made a part of your daily aquarium care. I prefer the filter floss, which I personally just discard every other day, replacing with new floss. I buy it by the bag for about $5 per month. For the record, I would never do this on a reef systems due to the increased phosphates that result from mechanical filtration.
if the noise is coming from the top, google durso standpipe. very simple to make with a few pieces of PVC.
if the noise is coming from where the water is entering the sump, extend the drain pipe so its submerged underwater. this will slightly slow the flow of the drain but greatly reduce any splashing noises as well as the salt creep that comes with it.
