New DYI Sump Design

Hello Everyone,

I currently have an Amiracle wet/dry filter sump on my 54 GAL corner tank. The main tank drain flows onto a white/blue filter pad that rests on the tray and then flows down to the water (no bio-balls). I want to add a protein skimmer, but I don't have enough space in the current sump.

I want to try my first DIY sump/fuge setup. Here is what I'm thinking:

I currently have a 10 gal aquarium, protein skimmer, and CPR Hang-On Fuge (here's the link). I'm thinking about adding the CPR Inlet (here's the link), my protein skimmer, and calling it good.

The 10 GAL tank will then basically have the return pump, live rock, chemi-pure bags, and the protein skimmer resting inside of it. The inlet w/sock will be the way water enters the tank. Part of the water flow will go to the HOB refugium, part in the skimmer, and the return will take everything to the main tank.

Here's my reasoning: I want to add to the water volume of my tank. 7" of water in my main sump will double my current sump volume. The HOB fuge adds another 2 gal of water, gives me a place to grow macro, and will allows me to avoid the baffles

Also, my tank contains soft corals, fish, and inverts - soon gorgonians.

Is this a good design? Will it work? Am I missing anything? I'd like to avoid baffles if possible.

Thanks!!!
Matt

I also have a 54 bowfront reef, and a 10 gallon sump, with a protein skimmer and live rock. I use the live rock as a bubble trap to prevent bubbles from returning to the tank. I think this is a better option than the CPR inlet, because the filter sock will trap detritus and indirectly cause phosphate accumulation. Live rock is effective at breaking up the bubbles that accumulate near your drain line.

Do you have any baffles in your sump? How did you secure the drain line in the sump? How do you make a bubble trap with the live rocks?

Thanks,

Matt

I plan to make the BIG CHANGE this coming weekend. When I remove the old sump and replace it with the 10G aquarium, do I just move the rocks out and dump the current sump? Is there anything in the current sump that would be beneficial to place in the new tank?

I'm thinking by dumping the sump water, it would essentially be a 10% water change. Should I take a phased approach to the modification?

1) Replace AMiracle sump with 10G aquarium
2) Add the skimmer
3) Add the CRP refuge

How much time between phases?

Do I need a fuge and skimmer?

Thanks,

Matt
