Neighbor's noisy filter

My upstairs neighbor installed a salt water tank a few months ago, and recently got a new filter. He swears he can barely hear it standing right next to it, but somehow the vibration is projecting downward -- there's a constant and fairly loud mechanical hum coming through my ceiling -- audible enough to cause a headache whenever I'm in our living room more than about 15 minutes. (I'm assuming it's the filter.)

He's basically said it's my problem and that if I have any solutions he'll be happy to try them. I suggested he talk with the store who sold him his set-up but he seems to think they won't be able to tell him anything else (he says he applied some thin pad(s?) to it already). I find that hard to believe.

I'd be grateful if anyone has suggestions. Apologies if this has been covered before, I searched the archives and didn't find anything about this specifically.

Thanks very much.

This is not uncommon. The vibration of the pump or canister is causing the noise. I suggest buying a small piece of styrofoam from Home Depot or Lowes. The pink insulation sheets work very well for this. Cut to size and place under the pump. This should stop the noise.

If your neighbor refuses to cooperate, I suggest playing extremely loud music and telling him it is his problem if the noise keeps him from sleeping.

Thank you! I've emailed him your suggestion (minus the loud stereo part -- that's the secret arrow in my quiver ) and have my fingers crossed that he acts on it soon. Hope you have a great weekend -- you've certainly improved mine!

Haha, i love it.

You could also suggest to him that the tank may fall through the celing because it's not ment to be on the 2nd floor or not under something that has a good and sterdy foundation... like the first floor. what size is the tank? hopefully not bigger then 20g, if it is, this may not be so far fetched.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea...
