Need some help on lighting sizes.......

I have a 30 gallon salt tank with about 30lbs of live rock, and 20lbs of live aragonite right now fish only. I am wanting to set some small rocks in the tank with button polyps on them to give it a better look and reproduce, they would be about 12"- 14" from the light source. My hood that came with my tank has a 24" 17W All Glass Aquarium 8000K "full spectrum" bulb. My budget right now isnt much I am going to have to keep the original new hood and rig up something, my budget would be to replace the bulb with a higher wattage bulb. Also the bulb is a T-8, will a
t-12 bulb fit into a T-8 fixture??? What are some ways I can increase my output, a T-5 $200-300 dollar rig is out of the question. I am hoping to keep my same fixture and put in a high output bulb but dont know that is possible...thanks in advanced guys and gals.

Ok I found out that a T8 and a T12 will fit into the same pin size, being that I have a rapid start bulb that came with my hood, couldnt I just buy a T12 VHO 75w 50/50 and the ballast be ok to run it????[/list]
