Is my protein skimmer working?

Hi everyone,

I installed a protein skimmer last week and I see the cyclone of water in the body of the skimmer but there is no foam accumulating at the top. Does anyone know how long before the foam and sludge are supposed to begin accumulating?

Also, there is a flimsy plastic tube hanging off of the thing with a tiny, twistable cap on it. I imagine turning it one way or the other does something but I tried it and noticed no difference.

I can't tell if the protein skimmer is set up properly or doing anything :( Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Michael

What you want to do is that little hose that has a twistable black piece on it. Turn that black piece slowly everyday till you notice that there is foam being produced into the collection cup. This my take a few days or just a day. What I noticed on mine was that foam was being produced at night while I was sleeping. So in the evening turn the knob a little(that controls the air flow through the skimmer) you should start to see some foam or liquid in the collection cup.
