My LFS said my skimmer was no good-What?

I put together a hang on skimmer from parts that seems to work pretty good. The collection box may need a little mods.My LFS said that only skimmers using designed components [collection box, pump, etc] would work correctly. Do I hear a sale of a skimmer from him ringing in my ears?

Yup.

I've seen plenty of DIY skimmers. There's nothing magical about them.

ha I just made a skimmer out of a 2 liter bottle, some clear PVC and an air stone and air pump. It seems to work fine. Just a question, was this a chain store?

A CPR Back Pak? Really?

$149 is a good price actually, but the unit itself is very poor quality. This skimmer is basically a piece of junk and odds are what you have built at home will work just as well.

As a general rule, whenever I see the phrase "my LFS told me....." I know that something is about to be worth a good laugh.

I may havt to re-adjust the position of the trap. I think too high above the water. How high above the water level should it be?
