On a monthly basis, how long should a UV run for?

I have a 70g fish only tank with live sand/rock. I just set up my UV sterilizer and I'm wondering how long I should let it run for. I have a powder blue and ick is always a concern (the rest of the fish are hardy). I read somewhere that you should only run it at night. Others say that you should run it one week out of the month. What do you guys think? ANy ideas?
thanks
