lighting a 30 gallon tank

Boy it's been a while since I've been on here but anyways, I now have a 30 gallon tank that is 15 inches tall and 12 inches deep. My light just fried, i turned on the switch and the circuit went up in smoke. So now i am upgrading, to the 36"x8" Nova Extreme SLR which puts out 156 watts. My question is and i hope i have given enough background knowledge, can this light in this tank support LPS and or SPS?

Hello,

Just thought I would weigh in on your lighting question. The old 4-6 watts per gallon rule for medium light loving corals and up to 10 for the high light loving ones is the rule of thumb used for years in the hobby. However the rule is a loose gauge, the reason is that tanks differ in depth and length so a tall 30gl tank requirement is going to differ from a wider shorter tank of the same volume. If I am not mistaken the rig your talking about is HO, not VHO correct? Those bulbs should come in 10K and then 50/50 actinic I think. If you run three of the four with the 10k and one actinic you SHOULD be able to have the SPS and LPS in the top third of the tank with no issues. You might be able to have them at the bottom but the HO is not putting out as much light as VHO and to be safe that is what I would do. Hope this helps.
