How to start a refug

I have a 20 gallon tank I want to make into a refug. I will add this to my 58 gallon tank. I plan on having it go through my sump.

How do I start this? Do I make fresh salt water and add it to the 20 gal tank? Then I assume I start it up.

Will there be a spike in the refug? Do I have to let the refug sit for 6 weeks till it levels out before I mix it with the main tank?

Any help is appreciated

No you can just start it up and let it run though the system.

Think of it as adding more water to a bigger system. If the tank is already cycled, it wont take long for the beneficial bacterias to spread to the sump/refuge.

Take pride in what you do, for it is a reflection of who you are.
