I just bought a 38 Gallon Aqueon and light setup last week and I am trying to set up a FOLR on a budget. So here is my question. My tank is 36 " long 12" wide and 19" high. I am going with either a korilia #2 or a #3 with a nano down by the sand. With a marineland bio whell 400 and a skimmer with a powerhead. Which size would you suggest. So that my fish and sand dont get blown all around. You have a very informative forum and I appreciate any and all replys as I am buying this tommorrow.

No biowheel filters unless you like nitrates, and a lot of them. That HOB is unneeded with you having LR, a PS, and powerheads (with water changes). That is your filtration there.

As to skimmers, I'm not good with suggestions on those. But, do you plan on stocking this tank heavily, lightly, with predators, etc? That could decide on what you need.

welcome to the forum.

agreed. no bio wheel.

to pre warn you this tank wont be cheap but can be done "cheaper" i strongly suggest making a check list of needed equipment, researching every one esp. protien skimmers. some are garbage and some are golden. do as much research as possible on the hobby as a whole and ask lots of questions to ensure greater chance of success and enjoyment as well as cut back the strain on your wallet. you may also want to look for a local reefing club in your area. mine is $12 a year and members constantly sell equipment cheap, share information and overall share similiar interest.

If you have actually decided, without question, that you want a FOWLR and will not be keeping any invertebrates or corals, then your situation is pretty simple.

The biowheel is an absolute no. There is no justification for people that recommend you intentionally input NitrAtes into a marine aquarium. The protein skimmer, live rock, and sand bed are all you need. The addition of the biowheel only degrades water quality.

As for a skimmer, on a 38 gallon I would suggest a SeaClone. It is a hang on skimmer, with a nice tall neck and good contact time. It will easily handle the load for this fish only aquarium. Save your money and buy from here:
SeaClone Protein Skimmers | Venturi Models | Protein Skimmers | Aquarium - ThatPetPlace.com

I would suggest the SeaClone 150. For the extra $20 it gives you a lot of upgrade potential in tank size.
