Found inexpensive lights how can I tell if they will work.

I like to do thing on the tightest budget possible. My question is can MH lights be found in non aquarium applications. I recently found large bell shaped light in the local pawn shop ($50.00 each). I have seen mom and pop aquarium stores use simialiar looking lights and when asked they referred to them as MH lights. How can I tell if this is what I'm looking for?

You can find small MH industrial lights similar to what you refer to. Keep in mind that many sources refer to MV, mercury vapor or sodium filled, set ups as metal halide even though they aren't and won't work for you. MV will not work in MH setups or vice versa. MV units are between $50-100 and come as described. I've heard a lot of arguing that most "aquarium" spectrum bulbs are meant to be mounted horizontal, not vertical so start researching that issue. You can buy Advance brand M80 ballasts, M52 sockets and bulk reflectors for around $100 a set up or less from most industrial sources. You'll still need the expensive bulbs.
