Are you talking about an underground filter? If so, I wouldn't go there. Too much of a hassle to clean the filter.
If you want to go cheap, but still good enough. Go with one of the many of the hang on the back filters. Just make sure you go with 1.5x or more than what the box says. If you have a 55 gallon get two 40-60 gallon hang on the back filters. Plus changing the filter pads are really easy.
No, but someone else thought that that's what I meant also... What I mean is a filter that you can mount submerged on the inside wall like a powerhead that has one attached. Do these filter well?
They are made for smaller tanks for 5 gallons or so and less. There's different bands too, just get a reliable brand and don't over stock and it'll be fine.
