Do I need a protein skimmer in a FOWLR?

I was at a saltwater store the other day and the guy at the store said that a protein skimmer is only useful in a reef tank and is ultimately useless in a FOWLR tank. He recommended I return it and get a uv sterlizer, so my question is should i keep my protein skimmer, and will it help in a fowlr tank?

I personally think that a PS would be suffiencent in a FOWLR tank. Gets the surface skum out, plus 'trates, 'trites, phosphate, etc. I am a person who beleives that you dont need a PS in reef tanks under 20 gallons, but it may work in a bigger one, since they can remove some nutrients corals feed off of.

I would add it to your tank.

So will my tank be fine without the uv sterilizer or is that a must have item? I'm wondering if the guy is just trying to sell me on a $250 piece of equipment

You don't need one if you are good at WC's. If you see a persistent algea or any other "bad things" that you can't get away, I tihkn I would get one.
