I have a freshwater tank that I want to convert to a reef tank. I allready have the fw fish moved to their new tank, so this one is just running with a little shrimp for cleanup right now.
Obviously I will need to add equiptment, live sand, and live rock, but I'm wondering about the converting process of the actuall tank.
I have only 1/2 an inch of sand in there, and am going to have live sand. Can I just add salt to the tank, stir in the live sand, and let it start cycling? I know the ben. bacteria is not the same, but I figure doing it that way would still help it cycle faster because when those bacteria die, It will create ammonia ans start the cycle. That way I wouldn't have to feed it.
Could I do that, or should I do a complete cleanout and scrubout and start 100% new?
Also, I know with fw, you are not supposed to put the tank near the window, but I've seen lots of people say to put your reef by a window for extra light. Is that a good thing to do with a reef?
Thanks in advance, and sorry for any potentially dumb questions!
