You do a good cleaning every month or so. What do the bags contain. If they contain carbon, wash one month after inresting then replace on second month.

I say get rid of the filter bags. And then just rinse the sponge in the tank water that you take out when you do water changes. IN my nano I have 1 sponge and thats it. Thats just to catch depris. Some one will ask then how are you filtering the waste out the water. In a 14 gallon I have 20lbs of live rock and the back is filled with macro algea.

It all depends on what you have in the tank. If you have enough live rock in there that will be your filter. Live rock acts as a filter. Macro algea is a algea that is good to keep somewhere in the water flow to consume all the nutrients in the water.
