Another pump question

I rigged a float switch to shut the sump pump off if it gets a low level. This keeps the pump from over flowing the aquarium or burning up the pump. The only problem is that as soon as the pump shuts off. The back flow kicks it back on. Then it just starts kicking off and on. I'm guessing you could use a check valve right above the pump's discharge. My question is how much less water will the pump flow?

I'm guessing that, if you're concerned about stopping the pump, that you are using an external overflow?

If not, then there is very little chance you will ever need such a set-up. (unless of course you make a habit of forgetting to top-off each day)

If you are using an external overflow and are concerned about a syphon break, or you are concerned about loosing too much water due to skimmer malfunction, excess evaporation, forgetting to top-off, or whatever other reasons you can think of, then the proper course of action would be to set the float switch to a relay with a reset. That way, the pump will not re-start without you addressing the cause first.

hope that helps
