Okay so I am new to the wonderful World of Saltwater and i have a 29 gallon tank that i am goint to be switching over. Any Advice that anyone has would be great, specially when it comes to skimmers.... I have a cascade 500 filter and a "Smartlite" for it already and have my eye on some live rock but i just need to know what the "essentials" are for getting it started!!!!!
29g is borderline skimmer. A skimmer will certainly help you control the tank better over time. If you are capable of keeping up with routine, maybe weekly water changes, don't overstock, and don't overfeed, you may be better off using the money to buy lots of salt for those water changes.
For a small tank, sumpless I presume, Octopus has been getting some good reviews on their HOT skimmers recently. I'm normally against HOT skimmers, but there isn't much room for waste to hide in a 30g tank.
Thanks for the wonderful information, however i am thinking i want to do a sump set up, actually i have a 20 gallon sump that i am picking up tmrw. and i have a 600gph pump for that already, I just need ideas for the skimmer and is there a certain kind of "live rock/sand" that i should start with. I know i have to let it cycle for a while so thats why i am trying to get things together that i need first ;) i want to do mainly a reef tank with a few small fish so any other tips would be helpful!!!
