Best Filter for me?
What is the best filter (external/any kind/money not an issue) to remove large waste and debris from my 125 gallon tank ?
I suppose the large Fluvals will do fine. Imo, since I have not dealt with a tank that size before, I'd combine several filtration units. One large HOB, and possibly a couple of the large Fluval models.
But someone with a large tank needs to chime in because they can advise from experience. 8)
How is a rena filster xp4 ?
I've only had this setup for a few weeks, but it seems to be doing an adequate job. Water quality is great, cleans all the crap out of the water.
Im running a large HOB filter (tetra biobag style) and an eheim 2236 canister. will soon be running a second eheim 2236 canister, I think. I want a sump but im afraid of drilling my glass in the 110.
right now its doing fine, but the media gets nasty fast. Id be tempted to consider one of the eheim 2260 (i think is the model) huge canister filters. they get pricey but they are well worth the money for that volume of filtration.
I also use the Rena xp3 and it runs silently. I use that along with a HOB and have had no issues whatsoever.
Looks like I just had a dodgy one or soemthing. Oh well. Just ignore my previous statement. :)
I've got an XP-3 running on a 55 gallon and to be honest I'm not all that impressed. It seems like there were always particles visibly floating around in the water. Plus practically every week it looses its prime atleast once, it never fails, I come home from work or wake up in the morning to find the impeller wirring with no water going back into the tank. I suppose it could be because I'm using the full length hoses but I couldnt cut them down because I needed the extra length where I put the filter.
I ended up having to buy a back up filter, an Aquaclear 70, because of the unreliabilty of the XP-3. Its sad when an XP-3 isnt enough to filter a measly 55 gallon that I had to buy another filter.
BTW he filter media I have in the XP-3 is:
(3) 20 PPI Foam
(2) 30 PPI Foam
(1) box BioChem Stars
(1) Micro Flitration Pad
I added the Aquaclear 70 and run just Purigen and the foam filters in it and the water has never been clearer. Personally, if I had it to do over again I would have passed on the XP-3 and just had 2 Aquaclear running instead.
I once got paid to set up a 110g for a lady on another forum. I got her 2x Eheim 2217 canister filters with a nice sump and an Eheim 1260 return pump. She had several smaller tanks all over the house. She was occupied with children while I did the install. Once I had it all up and running she came in to take a look. She asked me to plug everything in so she could see it running. Funny thing was it was all running.
That's when I heard the Rena and Fluval canisters that she had on her other tanks. She absolutely could not believe that the Eheim's were running until I pulled a return line out of the water and she could see the flow disturbed.
I always buy Eheim. I really like my 2260.
