Please help me requascape

Hey guys.

So im getting sick of my aquascape. There is not alot of plants, and the wood I have is just way to big for the tank. I think im ready to take this to the next step and plant kinda heavily (but still low tech). I have new driftwood, and my LFS has a decent selection of plants, so I could really use some help planning this as Im pretty bad at it.

its a 29 gallon tank. 30 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 18 3/4. I have 1 lifeglow bulb above it. I forget the wattage. I dose flourish comp, and use flourish tabs for my swords.

Here is the plants I have so far.

2 amazon swords
Java fern
java moss
anaubus
wendts red crypt or undulata, i forget
pygmy chain sword
giant temple (dont think i wanna use in this tank)
pennywort (i dont wanna use this in this tank, i find its hard to keep planted and i dont like the looks of it floating)
salvina (floating)
dwarf lilly bulb which seems to stop sprouting

I also have these "mystery plants" if someone could help identify

and.....

and i believe this is a large crypt, seen better days but has extensive roots.

lastly, this used to be very tall, but alot of it died, and it never grew back..

My LFS has these plants, but i would order online if someone has other suggestions
java lace fern
watersprite
narrowleaf chain
spiralis
microsword matt
undulata
lueta
red wendeti

I cant get a good pic of the drift wood but attatched is a horrible rendition of what a top down view would look of my tank, and how i think planting would work. The piece on the right would be a like a branch with the end closer to the front be in the gravel and the other end would be in the top right corner. I want it this way so my bamboo shrimp can climb to the top.

any pointers for filling in the rest of the tank with stuff from the LFS?

I think one common mistake many of us make is trying to put too many different plant species in a tank. As fish secrete chemicals (pheromones) so too do plants and some of the reason for this or that failing can be due to allelopathy.

Photos of the wood might help some of us suggest placement.

To your mystery plants:
Cryptocoryne, possibly C. walkeri var. lutea [see profile]
Cryptocoryne parva
not sure about third, maybe a clearer photo (without flash)?
Helanthium tenellum or Sagittaria subulata

Byron.

Byron.

Agreed, but I believe the third could be some type of sword, and the fourth (nearly certain) is Sagittaria subulata.

Fourth is definatly sagittaria subulata

Here is the tank as it is now. I only used one piece of wood. So far i think the fish like the extra sppace and im getting loachy dances!

So now i just need some help filling in the bare spaces.

I have two swords in the back corners, anubias, java fern and java moss on the wood. Two crypts and the sagittaria subulata in the front. Should the s. subulata be kept as my font "carpet" plant or maybe a midground or backgroud if i plant the 3 pieces i have together and hopefully it grows. Then maybe i would get pygmy chain sword as the "carpet".

As it mentions in the profile, Sagittaria subulata can vary and frequently grows tall. Mine certainly does, in any tank. Helanthium tenellum would be a better carpet though again here height can vary depending upon light (primarily) and nutrients.

Thank you. ill look into that plant. Any ideas for filling in the rest of the areas? Considering what my LFS has?

edit*

should have read the profile first. I will definatly use helanthium tenellum as my carpet.

I LOVE the wood that creates the cave. If it were me, (and it is not) I would just add several large Amazon Swords behind the wood as the long flowing leaves would sort of fan over the wood. I might also plant the annubias down near the bottom of the cave opening. That or Java Fern down there to fill that in a bit. I might also add some lilies in the front to add a different color. That or maybe an http://www.shop.plantedaquariumscent...NREDROOTED.htm if you do like the redish color.

I am one of those that makes the mistake of planting all different kinds of plants. I like variety. ha ha I find that some simply do not do as well as others in my tank and I go forward from there with that info.

Can't wait to see your tank as it progresses. You are getting some wonderful advice.

Thanks Inga, ill pay around with the few plants. I figure more swords in the back. The ones at the LFS are about the same size as the two i have in there now. Just dont know how many to get, and where to plant them, thats why im asking for some help. I dont really think i saw a plant I didnt like, allthough like I said, i dont like pennywort planted or floating. So ill buy anything that would work, but I dont wanna do things wrong and throw away more money.
