Can I mix my fiddler crab with my community tank?
In my fish tank, I have 6 guppies, 5 mollies (those are small mind you), a rainbow shark, dwarf gourami, ghost shrimps, a snail, soon to be loaches, a corydora, 2 striped raphael catfish and a glass catfish. I have room in the tank for a surface area and I was wondering, would my fiddler crab, he's not full grown, be happy and not bother anyone in the tank?
Crabs kill fish.. unless the fish kill them.
You HAVE a fiddler crab?
Just by this post I can tell you aren't taking proper care of him. He will be dead pretty soon.
Pet stores lie to you... these are NOT freshwater crabs...
They also NEED access to the surface... they need more land than water actually.
You are going to have to set up a brackish water system for him with marine salt for him to live... other wise he's going to wither away and die pretty soon.
Don't want to come off as mean, it's not your fault that he's in freshwater... pet stores should know better, and there isn't much info on them online.
I'd rehome him if you aren't prepared to set up a brackish environment. :)
Agree, they absolutely need a Brackish (slightly salty) setup and also a large area of sand or small gravel to burrow into, starting off shallow and going deep as you move away from the water line.
A lot of LFS do sell them as freshwater but sadly the information is incorrect and for the price they cost, no real big loss to the LFS for selling them..
Well... the crab is currently IN a brackish water environment and there's much land area that he tends to crawl on soooo, yeah. but anyway, I decided to keep him in the first tank he was in. But thanks ^_^
Oh phew. That's good to know! :)
