Noob Needs Help, Loosing livestock

This is my first saltwater tank, I purchased it used, It has been established and running since 2007. Its been set up in my home for two months now with no issues until this past week. I did a water test on saturday morning using the API test kit. these are my results
Salinity 1.023
Amonnia 0 ppm
Ph 8.2
Nitrite 0 ppm
Nitrate 0 ppm
Phosphate 0.25 ppm
Calcium 460
Alkalinity 161.1 ppm kh

Since this test I lost an emerald crab sunday afternoon, I lost a Skunk Cleaner shrimp tuesday evening and now My Lawnmower Blenny is laying against the rocks very little activity and seems to be laboring to breath. I have tested the water several more times since the loss of the crab and the results have not changed from the original test on saturday. what else can i check for to figure out why i am loosing my livestock. please help. and thank anyone and everyone in advance for there help

Are you sure that you lost the Inverts? Or did you just find a molt?
How much Live Rock is in the tank? does it have a Skimmer? Is the tanks bio load at limit with the fish being at full adult size? Your numbers are dead on, I'd not think you were having water issues. Do you dose the tank anything? Do you feed the inverts? Do you feed the Blenny?

I am 100% sure on the loss of the inverts, Yes I am running a ASM G1x protein skimmer. The inverts are eating frozen mysis shrimp. the blenny has been eating Omega one flake food, and the mysis shrimp as well.I have about 60lbs of live rock in the tank right now. I am running a 90 gallon pre drilled tank with a corner overflow, I have a 20 gallon sump with the G1x protein skimmer I am running a 1350 gph deep blue Triton return pump, I have two Korellia water movers in the tank one is a 1050 GPH and one is 750 Gph. I also have a magnum hot 250 that is running nothing but the center cartridge with activated carbon. the temp is at 77 degrees and stable. The only thing that I have added in the last week is the B-ionic calcium and magniesum.

Other than being shy in the bio media dept, meaning your Rock is way on the low side, and you should be running at minimum 1lb per gallon. Other than that, I' have not a clue as to what happened. Something had to have changed. Is the B-Ionic bad? Old perhaps? Last water change? Bad salt?

wseidl515 04-20-2012 08:56 PM

the B-ionic was purchased on Saturday. I stopped adding it the same day I lost my cleaner shrimp and have not added any since. according to the bottles the fill date was february of 2012. I done a partial water change of only 20 gallons on monday, I used Ro/Di saltwater purchased from the LFS. I did the water change then only due to the fact that I lost the emerald crab. The rest of the livestock appears to be acting as normal. This has really got me frustrated. I appreciate all of your help in this. The only thing that I have not checked for is electrical current in the water, I just find it hard to beleive that if that was the case it would show signs in all of the livestock.

It attacks the weak first, then the rest. But, its worth a shot. Check it out if you can. You also may have a bactieria floating around in the tank now. Might have to leave all alone for a few weeks to let it all settle a bit.

if you have taken a tank on from someone else, which means moving the whiole tank from his house to yours will lead to stress! which is the biggiest killer in fish keeping.

also how long has the animals been in the tank for, where they already in the system? or have you bought them?

can you get photo of the ill fish?

plus how old are the api test kit's?? as once the nirate/nitrite get to about 3/5 down they can give false reading. plus there not the best kits!!

I have lost my blenny. this is such a sad moment for me. I tested the tank for stray voltage and found no trace. The tank has been set up in my home for 2 and a half months now. all of the livestock in the tank are from the previous owner I have not added any since I set it back up after the move. The False clowns and the damsel where the originals and he had them since 2007 the Blenny was added to the tank in 2008 and the rest was added in 2010. thanks again for all of your help. As far as the test kits I purchased them after I got the tank home so they are about 2 months old. I had my water tested at the my LFS to confirm my results. There test showed the same numbers.

YEa, sorry about that. You definately got some kind of pathogen running the tank right now.
Lot of things you could try, but we have no idea what we are dealing with.
