Rams, Male or female & what typ r they?
I have resentley purchased 2 wild caught rams. I'm not shour if they r blu rams or something else.they look like blue rams but have more strips all the way down its side to its tail. I have had them for about 4 weeks. They were suposed to be a pair but I'm not quite shour if they are the same sex or oppsite, or what sex they are.The smaller of the 2, I think might be a female as it looks like it has a pinkish colour belly. The other has brighter colours, a longer top fin of the first 3 spikes, but it also looks as if it may also have a pail pinkish belly. they are constantley fighting since we created 2 seporate rocky areas with plants and a log in the middle. It is a 50 galon tank with a pleco and some larger comunity fish. I keep the tank temp @ around 82 deg and our water is rather soft. Can someone please help my figure this out?
Blue rams are usually more colorful.
From what you described the one with the 3 larger spikes in the top fin sounds like a male.
http://ramseythis is not a good pick but you can see the strips. it does not have any read on its fins like the bolivian rams do.
Photo isn't there. We have both species in our profiles, click the shaded name: Mikrogeophagus ramirezi and Mikrogeophagus altispinosus. There are photos of a pair for both species.
From you description of their interaction behaviours, both could be male, or one male and a female with the male not liking her. Both these species must select their own mate, to form a bonded pair. Males may harass and eventually kill a female they do not like when they are confined to an aquarium where they really cannot escape each other. I had this occur with my Bolivians in a 5-foot tank.
I think you may be right that they are a mail and feamale that do not like each other. But I havent seen them fight since I tryed to take picks of them. I think I scaired them. I think they might be blue rams. But there strips are more prodominant, & there are 6 black virtical strips that go from just past the eyes to the begining of the tail . Could that be because they are wild caught? I'v hered they have more colour.
