Sat here flitting thru the web and heard a huge splash and a thud! 1 of my Yoyos roughly around 3" in size had managed to find 1 of the small gaps in the top of the aquarium and launched thru it. I quickly jumped up and put the tanks light on and the room light to investigate. Opened up the hood to take a look inside. The little sod scared me flapping around and the hood quickly got shut! It really did stratle me! Opened it up again prepared this time and it had managed to slip quietly back into the water. 1st time this has happened and the other fish really didnt appriciate be woken up! Should i be worried of it doing this again?
Hi Molinious. Is there something shiny that has attracted this fish? Reflection of sunlight on the wall? It might not hurt to cover that small strip that is open. At least if it tries again to escape it will only have moved the cover. Keep an eye on him!!!
Cover up any open space on the hood. You don't want anything "launch" themselves out of it again.
For me, it used to be the snails coming out of it.
I lost three fish this way. I couldn't believe they would fit through the tiny opening at the top of the tank but with the right angle and speed, they managed to do it.
So yes, cover the entire top of the tank. I use foil on the back where the filter tubes sit.
+2 ... "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me". ;-)
Maybe foil..Or a piece of cardboard wrapped in plastic wrap?.. Or a piece of plastic cut to fit?
I used to keep livebearer's ,particularly swordtails which were keen for jumping from the tank, often through smallest of opening's.
Nylon window screen cut to fit, can work well.;-)
the gap is around 1cm square, the fish in question is around 3"long and roughlt a similar size to the gap, i was amazed!
