Creepy, Creepy WHERE did THIS come from?
So I was just getting ready to leave and I look at the fish, which is common practice. Gotta check to see if everyone is alright. Tonight I see Bentley, my crooked Cory sitting there on the bottom in the corner. He seems to be looking at a leaf that is waving around with the movement of water only... upon closer inspection, it is NOT a leaf. It is a worm of some sort. What the heck, where did that come from? This creepy thing looks like an earthworm, is (was) about 2 1/2 inches long and is reddish in color, much like an earthworm. What can that be? Where could it have come from? There has been nothing added to this tank for a long time. Let's just say I have a major creep factor going on right now. I feel like an alien showed up at my doorstep.

Anyone got any ideas? I mean, no birds flew over and dropped it in. It seemed to be trying to dig down into the substrate but wasn't making much progress. I think another 80% water change is in order and I might clean up the gravel a bit where I can get to it. ICKY!!!

Could be some sort of parasite or something.

The water parameters are great, the fish are seemingly healthy and normal. The tank is clean, the plants look good. Nothing has been added to this tank for a very long time. My only guess is that somehow it was in the food? Gross whatever it was and I HOPE it was a one and only deal. That thing was HUGE and yucky. It is very surprising to me that the fish wouldn't have eaten that thing. I mean, now it was too big but it must have started out small. Do you think it would have come in the freeze dried blood worms? Did one live through the freeze dry process and hatch out in the tank?

When I saw it I have no doubt I looked like this

I wonder if I need to worm my fish now? Ugh! If things like that show up in food, how does one prevent that?

The way you describe it, it actually sounds kind of like a leech, though I'm pretty sure that's not what it is. I doubt it's from the bloodworms though. Can you take a pic or did you already get rid of it?

I'd bet it's something harmless unless you spot it actually attached to a fish.

Mikaila31 04-14-2012 11:16 PM

Yeah I would bet it is harmless too. I've got tons of things crawling around in my tank, just not that big. Every now and then I find 1 cm long planaria for my fish to munch on.

It actually sounds like some kind of aquatic insect larvae. Probably diptera (flies, mosquitos, and the like). If nothing new has entered your tank then it wouldn't be an earthworm annelid (segmented) worm. With the weather getting warmer, we leave windows and doors open and bugs flies in the house. It's not really that uncommon to get aquatic insect larvae. Your fish will probably eat it, but I wouldn't worry about that either. Aquatic insects are like the rice of the fish world, everyone has a little bit in their diet! Just think of the little alien as a free fish meal. :-D

For further identification, could you get a picture?

Yeah the problem was it wasn't a LITTLE alien, it was a good 2 1/2 inches long and as big around as an earthworm. I was shocked. I got rid of it right away, hind sight says I should have took a picture but there was an ick factor that kept me from spending any extra time with it. I was shocked that the fish had not eaten it yet. I mean, surely they saw the thing well before I did. Also, I have not seen anything flying around my house that would start out at a worm that size. Whatever it was, I hope it was a one hit wonder and I don't run into any of it's friends. ICK!!!

OH comeone you have to have pics!!!.

I see you have boys...maybe one of them tried to feed your fishies an earthworm from the back yard.
