possibly spawning?

I noticed today that two of my acei will spin around each other quickly then go into some of the caves and lock lips then rub up against each other, is this what these cichlids do when they spawn?

Possibly... do you notice one going in front of the others and shake rapidly? If not it may just be 2 males establishing dominance. Not alot of differences between the two acts lol.

Lip locking generally does happen sometimes when spawning but most of the time, it is the male "shimmering" in front of the female, the female will release eggs, the male will fertilize them and the female will turn quickly and scoop them up into her bucchal cavity.

Give it a few days and if you notice a slight bulge in the throat area of one fish that you think might have spawned, then chances are she is holding. Generally she will not eat at all during the incubation period which last 18-24 days.

If she is holding then you might consider getting a small 10g tank to put her so she can spit the fry in that and not the main tank...depending on what other fish you have in the main tank then the fry might not make it. Leave the female in the fry tank until she is eating again and regains a bit of strength.
Generally they will NOT eat the fry but you have to pay close attention and provide cover for the fry to hide in case she does.

DO NOT be disheartened as well if her first batch of fry does not carry full term and she either spits them early or eats the eggs. Usually takes 2-3 tries before she gets it right and you get fry.

the 10g tank is a good idea I need to get one for a hospital tank anyways
