African Butterfly Fish and Circadian Rhythm
My butterfly fish has me wondering about the habits of the animal. No where in my research have I discovered anything about its waking-resting cycles.
During the day, my ABF sits motionless toward the bottom of my tank. Once it is evening, the fish stays at the surface through the night.
Is the ABF nocturnal, or do I have an awkward fish?
I would suggest your tank lighting may be bright. As it notes in our profile (click the shaded name African Butterfly Fish) it needs dim light, and floating plants. I had a pair of this species for many years, and the only time they ever left the surface was to jump out  or if they were stressed--as when i found one on the floor and returned it to the tank, it dove to the bottom for a spell. They should remain motionless at the surface, only springing into action when "food" comes by. Or if they are interacting, this is a fish that should be in a pair (male/female) or in sufficiently sized tanks a small group. More info is in the profile.
