help me identify a plant/moss?
Can someone help me identify this plant or moss? It came in the same bag with my java moss but it's clearly not java moss because it's smooth, not "furry"...
sorry I don't have a picture ... tried to take one but my camera isn't that great and the plant is so small I couldn't get enough resolution. I will try to describe it
- Lots of smooth tendrils, looks a little bit like a mound of spaghetti
- Each tendril is very thin ... less than 1 mm thick
- No visible roots (unless they are the same color/texture as the rest of it?)
- Tendrils are growing up towards the light about 2 inches so far
- Each tendril ends in a tiny curl
- Light green in color
- Each tendril has pairs of 5mm stemlike things growing out of it at regular intervals
- Tiny tiny round leaves occasionally appear next to the stemlike things... leaves are 1-2mm wide...but there are not very many leaves, it is mostly tendrils
seems like a cool plant .... I just have no idea what it is and googling didn't help much...
It sounds like Riccia. This plant can be fun to work with and can be used to for some interesting effects in a tank. It can also be a pain in the neck as it truely has no roots and can become a mess if it not kept if not held in check.
hey thanks for your response!
I looked at some pictures of Riccia and saw some in the fish store ... this plant looks very different from what I saw there ... (although, my LFS is not building up a very good track record with labeling plants that I've bought, so who knows... :))
I wish I had a good camera so I can take a picture :( probably if I had a picture it would be easier to identify.
This one looks almost like a wad of light green sewing thread. riccia each piece seems a lot shorter and thicker but the stems for this one are several inches long and thin as sewing thread (but thicker than hair algae). Only if I look very closely can I see the other stuff like tiny leaves, tiny protrusions from the thread here and there, and a tiny curl at the tip of each tendril. it is very weird.
I don't remember the name of it but it oculd be a tiny carnivorous plant that invades a lot of other plants. They plant only eat miniscule critters in the tank and I have never heard of them eating fry or anything that big. I will see if I can find the name again.
I think it is some kind of wort or something. I think I had some for a time and it sounds more like what you are refering to.
The only thing I could find was bladderwort.
ohhh ... you rock!! I googled bladderwort and found this picture that looks pretty much exactly like my plant. That is so cool that it's carniverous!! :)
I hope my other tank inhabitants aren't in danger? I have this plant growing on my "twig tree" along with some java moss, and also some floating at the water surface.
(you can see my yellow guppy Hedwig in this picture, and one of his feeder guppy lady friends, and some guppy babies near the water surface...i love my guppies!) :)
