Major tank problems...
HI. Ive been having a problem with my tank...
ammonia-.25 ??(it has been 0ppm forever!!)
anyways you see where the problem is...and my ammonia was at 1.0 Ive been doing daily water changes and its going down but Idk where this problem came from....Could it be the 4 neon tetras that I added last week...Ive had my tank set up for months now...isn't it established? I'm confused as to why I'm having these problems.
Also my heater and plants have a white cottony substance on them that only started "growing"?? yesterday...I have no idea what this is or what I should do about it....
If anyone has any suggestions I'm open...
P.s. I just got another 20 gal...any advice as to what I should do with it? I haven't even set it up yet because I don't wanna do the same thing I'm doing with the one I have now...
In established tank , there should be some measureable NitrAtes with an A, and zero for ammonia and nitrites with an I.
Would reduce feeding's both in frequency and amount and stay after water changes until ammonia and nitrites read zero for three or four consecutive day's and some nitrAtes are seen .
If tank has indeed cycled, (troubled by no nitrates),, and is crowded,or fish are overfed ,,then new addition of fishes could result in ammonia spike until such time as the bacterial colony can catch up with the load.
Cleaning filter material under tapwater which may contain chlorine can kill off some bacteria as well and perhaps this has happened?
White cottony substance sounds like possibly fungus developing on uneaten foods as bacteria begins to break it down.
Simply, do more water changes. Things usually clear up over time. White cotton may be a fungus as well, but that is a guess. Very hard to tell without seeing your tank.
