Setting up a 5 gallon shrimp tank (advice?)
I've been bouncing the idea around to set up a breeder tank so I can have my own private stock (eventually) of feeder shrimp. Before I go all out I'd like to try setting up a trial run with a smaller set up.
So I have a five gallon glass aquarium, a top for it (that will light it) and can get a sponge filter, and will use a sand substrate. It's not hard to get my hands on egg heavy (not sure if that's the right term) Ghost Shrimp. My question is what would the limits be for a 5 gallon? How many shrimp should can I put in there? One the fry leave the parents, they parents will probably end up being put into the big tank as food so as to give the fry plenty of room to roam.
I will of course put live plants into the tank. Also, what advice do people have on setting up a tank to become a shrimp tank? I do have my big tank that I can use to help a faster cycle/start up of the tank and do plan to utilize that.
I would not think Ghost shrimp have any higher bio-load than Red Cherry Shrimp, which I what I have in a planted, 5 gallon. I have so many, I can't even count (mostly babies are the big number). My nitrates are at 5ppm, and I'm doing a 1 gallon water change every other week. Just don't overfeed, that will be the key.
I would think if you're going to use them for food, you won't have to worry about getting overstocked, as you'll always be pulling some out.
Just make sure you have the right requirements of ph, temp etc in your water for them to breed. I have no idea what that is.
A sand bottom is way easier to keep clean, than gravel in a small tank.
