How long do you recomend keeping the light on per day?

10-12 hours maximum although 10 hours for me.

TrashmanNYC 12-04-2007 01:05 AM

Depends if you have plants ? do you ? If not the lights are only there for your benefit so you can see the fish. :D

no live plants presently......

Set your lights for a convient time for yourself then. Fish will not benefit from 12hrs per day for no reason.

whats the longest I should have them on?

mgamer20o0 12-06-2007 01:55 AM

well if you have them on that long and no algae problems then its fine. i would get a timer and have it set to go on and off when your around.

TrashmanNYC 12-06-2007 11:26 AM

I added a time and its on a total of about 5 hours now..........

My scenario:
I have two separate light fixtures on timers. One is a more subdued light which goes on around 7am. My main, much brighter, lights turn on around 1pm, at the same time the other lights are turned off. Then at around 6pm my main lights turn off, and just the subdued lights remain on until around 10pm.

So I'd agree with everyone else. Leave them on for however long you want, and whatever is most convenient to you. So long as you aren't leaving them on for too long, leading to potential algae problems.
