Bolbitis heudelotii (african water fern)
Bolbitis heudelotii (african water fern)??? Who has this plant in their tanks? Is it easy to grow? Can you get it to be a very nice THICK looking plant or is it always a little sparse looking? Is it easy to propagate?
I found this African Water Fern (Bolbitis heudelotii)
I've not tried it myself, but Kasselmann writes that soft acidic water (pH 6 - 6.8) is required (in basic water leaves often blacken), moderate light, CO2 is beneficial. Will be better close to the filter outflow. She observed it growing in its native Cameroon (Africa) in flowing streams having water with a GH below 4 dGH and a pH from 5.5 up to 7.2, temp 24C.
I second that it likes some current.. As Byron said, it prefers to be close to the current outflow.
I've also heard that it's a bit of a slow grower, so don't place it in the brightest part of your tank. It should do well at light levels similiar to java fern or anubias.
Thanks all for your input. I think it would look great but I might hold off as I have water with a PH of 7.4-7.6. That might be a bit hard for it. It is pretty though. I will think about it for awhile and then decide to try a bit or not.
