How many Angels can I add to my stock?
 

I am looking to increase the number of Marble Angelfish in my 50 gallon corner pentagon tank. I have three Angels in it now and will be adding BN Pleco in the next week or two. It is non planted, Rena XP2 mech/bio/chem, and 25" water depth. I'd like to add more if possible, what do the Angelfish experts on here think?

What other fish do you have? The bare minimum for these guys in a school is 4 and a 4 foot tank is best. They do get large, 6" in length when full grown.

Two would be all I would add.
I raised a group of nine in 56 gal column tank with Lemon tetras and a bristlenose.
Performed twice weekly fifty percent water changes to compensate for for the three or four feeding's a day for the young fish which quickly grew to adult size in under a year.
A pair formed and I gave the other's to my sister who still has them in 75 gal tank.
The Pair never produced fry and eventually they began to fight ,so I traded them for store credit to purchase other fishes that interested me.
five would work but you may wind up with a breeding pair and other's may need to be removed depending on the levels of aggression from the pair.
Or could be that no pair forms, and they all get along like ticks on a dog.8-)

How long have you had the three existing angelfish? If you read our profile, it mentinos the risk of adding angelfish to an existing group.

Byron, they have been in this tank for 8 months although it has been up for about 18 months.

If I get two more, I am going to completely redo the tank so they can all redecide their territories. Have a friend who's big into Angels and this is what she recommends. I should be getting a large piece of Grape Vine to add and some new rocks or plants. The ones I can get will be coming from the same place I got these so they'll be kin, not sure if they will know that or if it'll make a difference.

Of course I'll watch them closely for bullying.

That can sometimes work, it all depends upon the fish you now have. That is where the dominant male resides (if there is one); the "kin" matters not.:lol:

Getting same sized angels may help too. Little quarter sized ones may not fare well with hand sized ones.

I would steer clear of the Grape Vine.
I had a horrible experience with it where I lost a fish and had to redo my entire tank.
It developed a fungus over all exposed surfaces, not sure if this was toxic or if it caused a Nitrite spike due to rapid decomposition.
Invest in some real wood, it won't look quite as cool and twisty, but it'll be worth it in the end.

Only one more and make sure its about the same size cause they might gang up on a lil one- and over crowding will cause them to get evil with each other
