platies first babies

I think one of my female platies is pregnant:roll:, This will be her first load of fry and I have read many articles that say the first time they give birth you cant expect a high survival rate. This is my first experience with platies. I bred orandas before and generally about 6 would make it to young fish out of 50+ eggs. Can anyone give me some advice about the first birth ...

Usually the first time any livebearer gives birth the don't have very many fry. When one of my young female palties I had and raised from a fry had her first batch she only had 12 fry. In the end I had 3 who survived to adults.
If you want to save as many as possible put her in a breeding trap or separate tank right before she gives birth. I have never been a fan of putting the females in breeding traps, i think it stresses them out to much, and i never had a separate tank so i always just put a bunch of floating plants in the tank and when I found fry in plants would put them in a breeding trap. hope this helps :-)

I have fry ! I noticed one this morning, I wasn't expecting to see them because I didnt think she was fat enough yet ! I only seen one to start with but after moving the fish out of the tank and searched around a little I found 3. Ive put them in a hatchery and ill try to take care of them the best I can. Its been a while since ive had fish babies

Congrats fish mom :) Aren't they the cutest things when they're first hatched? Just two eyes and a hint of a body swimming around.

Yeah they really are ! I hope they survive ! I have got Brine shrimp to feed them but how do you know if there eating?

You got the baby brine shrimp right??

You should also give them some Hikari first bites. They sell it just about everywhere. Since you already have them isolated, it should be fairly easy to see that they're eating.

Yeah I've given them some of that already, I am going to the pet shop tomorrow to see what else I can get for them! I have gotten attached to them already

She must have had more at some point ! I was looking in the tank today and spotted another baby in amongst the plants. I am leaving it there because i put the fish through a lot of stress yesterday trying to get the babies out so there's lots of places for it to hide hopefully it doesn't get eaten! I am amazed because she didn't look fat enough at all I was expecting another few weeks or so before I seen any fry and it definitely is from one female because the other 2 are definitely not pregnant.
