10 gal. lighting
So I've got a ten gallon. It currently has LED lighting from marineland. They just aren't cutting it though. I can only plant medium to low light plants in the middle of the aquarium where all of the light is. I have to fill the outside edges of the aquarium with fake pl;ants which I really don't like to do. So my question is, could anybody recomend a good hood/lighting combo for a ten gallon planted aquarium. I was thinking just a good florescent light would do. I also want it to be inexpensive (i'm thirteen and this whole aquarium has put a beating on my financial situation). The tank is a standard 20" X 10". Thanks for any input!
There are two types of fixtures. One with an 18" T8 fluorescent, or one with two sockets for incandescent bulbs. Both will work just fine.
For the one with two sockets, just buy two 10W CFLs at the 6500K color temperature. You should be able to find them in hardware stores and they will cost about $10. This will be on the high side of moderate lighting so you'll want floating plants unless you are doing CO2 injection.
In both cases you'll have to at least buy the fixture, and possibly a hood if the one you have will not work with a standard light fixture.
It's possible to find an 18" fluorescent shop light that would work as well and be cheaper, but you must find one you can use without the bulb touching the hood. Do not get a dual T8 fixture as that would be too much light.
You can also get a couple clamp on lights to use CFLs in. Just don't clamp them to the tank.
In all cases, you need a hood to not only prevent the fixture from falling into the water, but to keep the humidity off the light fixtures. Hoods can be glass (best) or plexiglass cut to size (bends easily, get a thick piece).
Thanks so much for the reply! Very helpful. The hood that I have rright now is custom for my LED's. So that wont help much for any other light fixtures. I was thinkig about going with a 2 socket incandescent system. I've seen a bunch of hood combos for these setups. Would you recomend any? I am currently running CO2 (it makes a huge difference from what I have noticed). Thanks for all of the info!

Those look great! For a decent price too. I'm going to take a trip to my lfs tomorrow and see if they carry that or something similar. I have a bunch of store credit therefrom breeding shrimp, platies, etc.
