Gosh darn it... Snails?

So as I went to feed my fish just now, I noticed a few small blackish brown snails crawling around the tank. Should I be worried? How do I get rid of them if I should be?

Probably bladder snails and no you shouldn't be worry. They do more good them bad. Actually I not sure they do any "Bad" other then some people don't like the looks of them.

Phew. Then so long as the population doesn't start to resemble an exponential growth curve, I'll leave them be!

Just don't overfeed and the population will stay under control.

Cool. As far as I know, I don't overfeed - my two guppies and three ghost shrimp get about as much as they can eat off the surface in about 1.5-3 mins.

As Boredomb said, snails are one of the aquarist's best friends when it comes to a healthy tank. They get into places we can't and they eat everything organic, breaking it down into smaller bits that the bacteria can more easily handle.

They will populate in proportion to the available food, meaning the waste and other organics. Everything you feed the fish becomes waste obviously, along with other natural organic waste. Don' worry if the snails multiply; it just means they are dealing with stuff you cannot even see.

Byron.
